Cost and quotes
How much does a retaining wall cost in San Diego?
Timber and basic block walls run about $25-$45 per square foot installed. Natural stone and engineered segmental systems run $50-$90 per square foot. Taller walls, steep site access, and drainage systems push the total higher. The on-site estimate sets the written price.
Is the on-site estimate really free?
Yes. A crew walks your slope, checks the existing wall and drainage, and hands you a written quote with no obligation and no trip fee for your zip.
Can I replace just one section of wall?
Yes. Single-section repairs, partial replacements, and drainage-only fixes are all common. You do not have to redo the entire wall system at once.
Materials and systems
What is the difference between concrete block, natural stone, and segmental systems?
Concrete block and CMU are strong and economical, good for utilitarian walls. Natural stone is durable and attractive but more labor-intensive. Engineered segmental systems like Allan Block use interlocking units with geogrid reinforcement and are the standard for taller walls that need structural performance and a clean look.
My retaining wall is leaning. Does it need to come down?
Not always. A slight lean caused by drainage backup may stabilize after drainage is fixed and the wall is re-plumbed. A wall that has lost its footing or cracked through the face usually needs full replacement. The on-site inspection tells you which it is.
How important is drainage behind a retaining wall?
Critical. Most retaining wall failures in San Diego are caused by hydrostatic pressure from water that has nowhere to go. Every wall we match needs open-graded aggregate and perforated pipe behind it, with a proper outlet so water exits before pressure builds.
Permits and process
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in San Diego?
Generally yes for walls over four feet from bottom of footing to top of wall. San Diego County and most cities also have rules on surcharge loads, proximity to property lines, and engineered design for taller walls. Your crew handles the permit when the scope calls for one.
How long does a retaining wall project take?
A standard residential wall takes two to five days on site. Larger terraced systems or commercial projects run one to three weeks. Emergency stabilization on a failing wall can start same week.
Do you handle slope grading along with the wall?
Yes. Grading behind and around the new wall is part of the scope on most hillside projects. Your crew handles cut, fill, compaction, and finish grade as part of the retaining wall job.
About the service
Are you the company doing the work?
No. Wall Pro SD is a referral service, insured not licensed, cslb.ca.gov. We match you with insured local wall crews and help you get a clear written quote. The crew you hire does the work.
Are the crews insured?
The crews we match carry general liability and workers comp, and we confirm coverage before work starts. You can verify any California contractor license at cslb.ca.gov.
What does the service cost me?
Getting matched and getting the on-site estimate and written quote costs you nothing. You only pay the crew you choose for the actual retaining wall work.
